Description
A temple of the Rinzai Engenji school, with Dainichi Nyorai as its principal image. Originally it belonged to the Kegon sect, but it was converted to the Rinzai school in 1868. For the past fifty years the temple has kept large numbers of bell crickets (suzumushi), coaxing them to mature and sing throughout the year — a tradition said to have begun when a former head priest attained enlightenment listening to their voices. A visit takes the form of sitting in on a dharma talk. The temple is also famous for its Kofuku Jizo and its happiness-granting amulets.
