Description
Centered on Japanese-style paintings connected with Kyoto, the museum holds some 1,600 works of art, including Western-style paintings, sculpture, and crafts. Completed in 1934, the building was based on the winning entry of a competition whose guiding principle was that the design should be "grounded in Japanese taste." Its storehouse was set half below ground so as not to obstruct the beautiful scenery of the Higashiyama hills.
