Description

Set in the Sagano district, this is a large pond with a rustic, countryside feel. Visiting in autumn or winter can feel a little too lonely, but in spring, with cherry blossoms and rape flowers dotting the scenery, it becomes a pleasant, pastoral spot. On summer nights it has an eerie air, as though a yokai or spirit might appear at any moment — an unsettling charm of its own. The road running from Hirosawa Pond to Sagano is called the Chiyo-no-furumichi (Ancient Path of Chiyo), winding through rural landscapes with an open, uncrowded feel (at least by day). The poet Tameie even sang of it: "In the shade of the willows on the bank of Hirosawa Pond, the green deepening, the spring rain falls."
