Description
Founded in 984. Its formal name is Shinsho Gokuraku-ji — "Shinnyodo" is actually the name of the main hall. The main hall itself is an impressive tile-roofed structure housing a standing Amida Nyorai, one of the Six Amida Pilgrimage Sites of Kyoto.
Both the main hall and the three-story pagoda date from the Edo period, and since they're relatively recent historically, the temple doesn't usually make it onto tourist itineraries outside of autumn. But the empty, quiet grounds and the atmosphere of the adjacent cemetery really do evoke old Kyoto. During autumn foliage season, it's genuinely beautiful.
