Description
Located on Mount Yoshida, just east of Kyoto University's main gate. Founded in 859 when the deities of Nara's Kasuga Shrine were invited here to serve as guardian spirits of the capital. In the late 1400s, Yoshida Kanetomo founded the Yoshida school of Shinto. The shrine enshrines 3,132 deities from shikinai shrines across Japan. The distinctive octagonal saijo-sho and other unusual architectural features are said to embody the principles of Yoshida Shinto.
The summit of Mount Yoshida is now Yoshida-yama Park, where you'll find a monument inscribed with the song "Kurenai Moyuru" from the old Third Higher School era.
The treetops are tall at the summit, so getting a good view of the surrounding scenery is actually pretty difficult.
