Description
Located at the eastern end of Shijo Street.
The vermillion-lacquered West Tower Gate, rebuilt in 1497, stands at the entrance, and inside the grounds you'll find the Ekijinja shrine, Ota Shirahige Shrine, and Ebisu Shrine.
Locally known and loved as "Gion-san," the shrine also has a sub-shrine dedicated to the patron deity of performing arts, which is why maiko frequently visit.
In summer it hosts the Gion Festival, and on New Year's Eve it's famous for the Okera Mairi ceremony. On that night, food stalls line the grounds and the festivities go all night long.
