Description
Built by Ashikaga Takauji in 1341. Two years later, a secondary temple was built at the present location, and after Takauji's death, it was renamed Toji-in. As the family temple of the Ashikaga clan, the Reiko-den hall on the grounds houses wooden statues of all thirteen Ashikaga shoguns. The pond-circuit strolling garden "Fuyo-chi no Niwa" (Lotus Pond Garden) blooms with irises, azaleas, and flowers of many colors. It's a bit off the main tourist routes, so the crowds are thin.
