Description
History of To-ji:
The head temple of the Toji Shingon sect. Construction began around the same time Kukai departed for Tang China in 804. In 823, To-ji was granted to Kukai by imperial decree. Construction of the Kodo (Lecture Hall) began in 825, and the five-story pagoda in 826. After Kukai's death in 835, the temple flourished as a sacred site of Shingon esoteric Buddhism, but it fell into decline until the monk Mongaku led a restoration effort in 1189.
The Kondo and pagoda were subsequently lost several times to the Muromachi-era peasant uprisings and fires.
On the 21st of every month, the Kobo-ichi flea market is held here.
