Description
Mountain name Enichi-zan, head temple of the Rinzai Tofuku-ji school. Principal image is Shaka Nyorai. Founded in 1236 by Shoichi Kokushi Enni Ben'en. The main gate is a National Treasure and a fine example of early Muromachi architecture. The Zen hall is the oldest surviving monks' hall. The checkered moss garden and bold stone garden are the work of Shigemori Mirei.
The autumn foliage from Tsuten-kyo Bridge is absolutely stunning, though the crowds during peak season are intense. The fresh green of early summer is also recommended.
Since it's off the main tourist routes, the temple is usually quite empty — but on autumn weekends, the crowds are frightening. The checkered pattern of the abbot's garden is also famous.
