Description
Head temple of the Sennyuji school of Shingon Buddhism. Due to its deep ties with the Imperial household, it is known as "Mitera" (the Imperial Temple).
Since the funeral of Emperor Shijo was held here in 1242, successive emperors' funerals have been conducted at Sennyuji, and the grounds include the Tsukino-wa Imperial Mausoleum and other imperial tombs.
The Buddha Hall houses a triad of Shaka, Amida, and Miroku attributed to the sculptor Unkei. The Yokihi Kannon statue in the Yokihi Kannon Hall is known for prayers for beauty.
The autumn foliage in the Goza-sho Garden is also splendid.
