Description
A shrine believed to bless married harmony. There's a statue of "Okame," a woman who took her own life to protect her husband.
In February, the Okame Setsubun festival brings good fortune, and on December 7th and 8th, the daikon-daki (stewed radish) event draws crowds.
Besides the principal Shaka Nyorai statue, the Treasure Hall displays numerous temple treasures including the Ten Great Disciples statues by the sculptor Kaikei.
The main hall is the oldest building in the city of Kyoto (1227). It's very simple, but beautiful. The large weeping cherry tree is a must-see during cherry blossom season.
