Basic Information
Description
Said to have been established in 1007 on the site of the residence of the mid-Heian-period onmyoji (yin-yang diviner) Abe no Seimei, enshrining him as the deity.
Afterward, the shrine had been shrinking, but during the Edo period, a parishioner district was organized and the grounds were gradually restored.
The current main hall was built in 1928. Seimei's grave was originally at Tenryu-ji, but in 1952 it was purchased from Tenryu-ji and relocated here.
Nearby is the Ichijo Modori-bashi bridge, where Seimei is said to have kept his shikigami (spirit servants). Apparently, there are special perks for school trip students (only for those who draw an omikuji fortune) — check the website for details.
