Description
Originally part of Emperor Go-Shirakawa's detached palace, Rengeo-in.
The main hall (National Treasure) got its name from having 33 bays between its pillars.
It houses 1,001 statues of the Thousand-Armed Kannon — the principal seated Kannon (National Treasure) flanked by 500 standing Kannon on each side — along with statues of the Wind God and Thunder God (Kamakura period, by the Kei school).
Every January, the traditional "Toshiya" archery contest and "Yanagi no Okaji" ceremony, both dating back to the Edo period, are held here.
