Description

Founded in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto, with Giten Gensho of Myoshin-ji as the founding abbot.

Ryoan-ji is famous for its rock garden, one of the most iconic in all of Kyoto. Fifteen stones of varying sizes are arranged on a bed of raked white gravel, and it's well known that no matter where you stand, you can never see all fifteen at once. The question is: if you know there are fifteen and strain to see them all, or if you simply accept the fourteen you can see — which experience is the real one?

The temple grounds are spacious, with plenty of maple trees, making it a great spot during the autumn foliage season too.
