Description

Its mountain name is Gyozan. Located along the Ryo River. Tendai sect.
The main hall enshrines Yakushi Nyorai (Medicine Buddha), Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha), and Amida Nyorai (Amida Buddha).
The monk Ennin founded it during the Tenju era (851–854) as a training hall for Tendai shomyo (Buddhist chanting). It came to be called Raigo-in after the monk Ryonin, founder of Yuzunenbutsu, revived the temple in 1109.
The principal image, Yakushi Nyorai, together with the flanking Amida Nyorai and Shaka Nyorai, dates from the Heian period and is designated a National Important Cultural Property. The temple is known as the birthplace of shomyo (Buddhist liturgical chanting).
