Description

Built in 1603 as lodging for the shogun's visits to Kyoto, this castle also served as the military headquarters during both the Summer and Winter Sieges of Osaka. The castle's keep was lost to a lightning strike in 1750. In 1867, it was in the Grand Hall of the Ninomaru Palace at Nijo Castle that Shogun Yoshinobu made the historic decision to return governing power to the Emperor.

The Ninomaru Palace is considered a prime example of Edo-period warrior-class shoin-zukuri architecture, with its buildings arranged in a zigzag pattern along the Ninomaru Garden. The Honmaru Palace, on the other hand, was relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace in 1893 and looks surprisingly modest — almost like an old private house.
