Description

Originally built in 1264 as a detached palace for Emperor Kameyama, it was converted into the head temple of the Rinzai Nanzen-ji school in 1291.

The vast grounds feature the Imperial Messenger Gate, the Sanmon Gate, the Lecture Hall (Hatto), and the Abbot's Quarters (Hojo) all lined up from west to east in a straight row.

(Important Cultural Property) Hip-and-gable style with tile roof. This is the gate made famous by the kabuki line where the bandit Ishikawa Goemon exclaims, "What a view! What a magnificent view!"

(National Treasure) The Greater Hojo was originally the Seiryo-den (Emperor's residential hall) relocated from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Hip-and-gable style with thin wooden shingle (kokera-buki) roof. The sliding-door painting "Tiger Drinking Water" in the Lesser Hojo is by Kano Tanyu.

On the south side of the Hojo. A dry landscape (karesansui) garden designed by Kobori Enshu. Known as the "Tiger Cubs Crossing" garden.
