Description
Originally founded by Emperor Konin in the Nara period.
The monk Myoe revived it in 1206. It is now an independent temple of the Shingon Omuro-ji school. Famous for Japan's first tea plantation, created by Myoe, and for the Choju-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals). Only reproductions of the scrolls are displayed here — the originals are held by the Tokyo National Museum. The autumn foliage season is also recommended.
