Description
Founded in 1175 when the monk Honen established a small hermitage here.
It is one of the head temples of the Jodo (Pure Land) sect.
The Miei-do (main hall) enshrines a portrait of Honen. During the Bakumatsu period, the Aizu domain had its headquarters here, and there is a cemetery for Aizu soldiers who died in the conflict.
But nowadays it's a very peaceful place. You'll see kids playing, neighbors chatting — it has a nice, easy-going vibe of its own. The Kurodani Cemetery is especially recommended during cherry blossom season.
