Description
The former residence of the Edo-period artist Hon'ami Koetsu.
In 1615, Tokugawa Ieyasu granted him this land. Koetsu's family and associates settled here, and the area flourished as an artists' colony. After Koetsu's death, the property was converted into a temple. Today you can see Koetsu-ji's distinctive bamboo fence known as the "Koetsu-gaki" (also called Gagyuu-gaki, or "Reclining Ox Fence"), the "Taikyo-an" teahouse where Koetsu spent his final years, and Koetsu's grave.
