Description
Founded in 1606 by Kita-no-Mandokoro (Nene), the principal wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to pray for his soul.
Originally a Soto Zen temple, it now belongs to the Rinzai Kennin-ji school. Its formal name is Kodai Seiju Zen-ji.
Highlights include the garden designed by Kobori Enshu (famous for its bush clover), the Kaisan-do hall with wall and ceiling paintings by the Kano school, the Otamaya mausoleum (Nene's burial site, Important Cultural Property), Kodai-ji maki-e lacquerware (Important Cultural Property), and the Kasa-tei and Shigure-tei tea houses (said to have been designed by Sen no Rikyu, both Important Cultural Properties).
Plum blossoms in spring, bush clover in autumn, and the autumn foliage light-up events are also well known.
