Founded in 1202 by Myoan Eisai, this is Japan's oldest Zen temple, with 14 sub-temples on its grounds. Famous for the "Wind God and Thunder God" folding screens by Tawaraya Sotatsu, the "Cloud Dragon" painting by Kaiho Yusho, and the "Cherry Blossoms" and "Autumn Grasses" screens by Kano Sanraku.
The tea room "Joan," designated a National Treasure, has been recreated within the sub-temple Shoden Eigen-in on the grounds.
