Description
Said to have been relocated from Nara in 794 (Enryaku 13) when the capital moved to Kyoto. The main hall is built in the Hirano-zukuri style (also called hiyoku kasuga-zukuri), where two of the four buildings are joined together in a paired structure slightly different from ordinary shrines. The grounds contain about 500 cherry trees of around 45 varieties. Every year on April 10, the "Sakura Matsuri" cherry blossom festival is held, featuring a parade of flower-viewing carts and portable shrines. The 400-year-old camphor tree is also magnificent.
