Description

The Upper Shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami along with the three Munakata goddesses — Tagorihime-no-Mikoto, Ichikishimahime-no-Mikoto, and Tagitsuhime-no-Mikoto. The Lower Shrine enshrines Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Amenominakanushi-no-Kami. The shrine is said to have been established in the late 5th century (during the reign of Emperor Kenzo) when the deity was invited from Hyuga Province.
Within the grounds, there's Ama-no-Iwato — a cave that is said to purify you of bad luck if you crawl through it.
Because it's in an inconvenient and hard-to-find location, very few people visit, and that rustic, secluded atmosphere is actually what makes it worth the trip.
