Basic Information
Description
Built in 1602 (Keicho 7) by the 12th head priest Kyonyo Shonin. It split from Nishi Hongan-ji and became the head temple of the Shinshu Higashi Hongan-ji branch.
The Goeido (Founder's Hall) is one of the largest wooden structures in the world, housing a statue of the sect's founder, Shinran Shonin. The Goeido-mon gate is one of Kyoto's three great gates — the other two being the Sanmon of Chion-in and the Sanmon of Nanzen-ji.
