Description
Enshrines Wake no Kiyomaro, his sister Hiromushi, and Fujiwara no Momokawa.
Located along Karasuma Street, west of the Kyoto Imperial Palace.
Wake no Kiyomaro is the man who thwarted the monk Dokyo's scheme to usurp the throne — Dokyo had been favored by Empress Shotoku (Koken) and plotted to become emperor himself. Kiyomaro refused to yield to Dokyo's threats and bribes, standing firm in his convictions and earning lasting respect.
Formerly a special government shrine, it was moved from Jingo-ji to its current location in 1886. It originated when Mongaku, upon restoring Jingo-ji, enshrined Kiyomaro as its guardian deity.
The grounds are full of wild boar motifs — these commemorate the legend of boars that protected Kiyomaro on his journey to Osumi Province.
Blessings include career success, protection from job loss, leg and foot health, recovery from illness, and relief from asthma.
