Description
Soto Zen sect. The principal image is Shaka Nyorai (Shakyamuni Buddha). Established in 1347 by Settsu-o as a retirement hermitage. In 1694, Dohaku revived the temple and converted it from Rinzai to Soto Zen. The highlight is the main hall, which features two windows looking out onto the garden — a round one called the "Window of Enlightenment" and a square one called the "Window of Delusion."
The ceiling is a blood-stained ceiling, relocated from Fushimi Castle as a memorial to the fallen. You can still see bloody handprints and footprints on it.
