Description
Originally built in the early Heian period as a detached palace for Emperor Saga. It was converted into a temple starting in 875, and successive imperial princes served as head priest. The Shinden Hall's "Peony Room" features "Peony" and "Red Plum" paintings by Kano Sanraku. The Shoshin-den, built in the shoin-zukuri style, houses ink landscape screen paintings by Kano Motonobu and fusuma paintings by Kano Tanyu, all quite famous.
