Description
A World Heritage Site.
Founded when Rigen Daishi, a grand-disciple of Kukai, enshrined Nyoirin Kannon and Juntei Kannon at the summit of Mt. Kasatori. Under the patronage of Emperor Daigo, the entire mountainside became the temple's grounds. Most structures were destroyed during the Onin War, but the five-story pagoda, built in 951, survives as Kyoto's oldest wooden structure.
The cherry blossoms here have been famous since the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Since the entire Mt. Kasatori is temple grounds, seeing both Kami-Daigo (Upper Daigo) and Shimo-Daigo (Lower Daigo) will take half a day.
