Description
Founded to memorialize Juren and Anraku, two disciples of the monk Honen. The story goes that Matsumushi and Suzumushi, favorite consorts of Retired Emperor Go-Toba, were so moved by the preaching of Juren and Anraku that they became nuns. The furious emperor had Matsumushi and Suzumushi sentenced to death, forced Juren and Anraku to take their own lives, and banished Honen into exile. The grounds still hold the memorial pagodas for Juren and Anraku, as well as the graves of Matsumushi and Suzumushi.
On the annual Pumpkin Memorial Day, pumpkin dishes are served to visitors and the temple's treasures are put on display.
