Description

Jodo (Pure Land) sect. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. Founded in 1609 by the monk Dansei Shonin.
The main hall enshrines a self-carved statue of Dansei Shonin.
It also houses an Amida Nyorai statue (Heian period), a Yakushi Nyorai statue, and an Eleven-Faced Kannon statue.
The highlight is the long approach from the Tang-style Ryugu Gate (Dragon Palace Gate), which winds along a stream. There are virtually no other visitors, and the path is a bit lonely — even a little spooky, honestly — but the atmosphere along the way is really something.
The stone sarcophagus containing a mummified body is housed in a cave that the monks carved out of rock themselves. The atmosphere here is genuinely intense.
